About Marshalling
Marshals are required at all motorsport events as they are integral to the smooth operation of the meeting. Marshalling is a voluntary exercise but is a great way for people to get involved in motorsport without the expense of competing. There are few limits to who can marshal (trackside marshals must be aged at least 16), and a grading system is used to recognise experience and training whilst ensuring that new marshals are not dropped straight in at the deep end.
Marshalling at an SMRC meeting normally means being at Knockhill Racing Circuit for a 7:45am sign on. Marshals are assigned to the posts they will be at for the day and a briefing is held. Track activity normally starts at 8:30am by which time marshals should have arrived on post, checked equipment and inspected the track. New marshals start at the 'Trainee' grade which allows them to observe what happens and get an understanding of what to do when situations arise.
At Knockhill, all posts have a reasonably sized hut with room for storing bags etc. The weather can be inclement so it is advisable to bring waterproofs and extra layers of clothing. Lunch is provided at all SMRC meetings, usually consisting of a meat pie, sandwiches, crisps and a drink.
