Marshals
Marshals are an essential part of motorsport; without them events cannot happen. As such, a team of marshals are required at each meeting. For those already involved in marshalling for the SMRC, important information will be included below. Anyone interested in getting involved can find further information on our marshalling pages or can alternatively apply online.
Please see below for a selection of photos of our marshals in action:
Marshalling for the SMRC
SMRC meetings generally take place at Knockhill. Details for individual meeting vary, but marshals are generally required to sign on between 7:15 and 7:45am at the marshals' building beside Race Control. The sign-on process allocated marshals to a discipline and a post on the track for the day. A briefing for all marshals is held before heading out to post, generally for 8:30am.
Lunch is generally provided for marshals at SMRC events, and racing normally finished between 4pm and 5pm. Marshals should ensure that they are adequately prepared for a day at the side of the circuit, facing all weathers with extremely variable conditions.
Anyone interested in marshalling should contact Lynn Perkins whose details can be found on the contacts page.
Marshalling at other Race meetings
Whilst the SMRC orgainises most circuit racing in Scotland, marshals are permitted (and encouraged) to visit other circuits to marshal at other events. A large range of events are run across the country - to marshal at these it is generally necessary to contact the marshalling co-ordinator at the organising club for the meeting you are interested in (note that clubs organise meetings at a range of circuits, and no one circuit is restricted to any particular club). The links below are designed to provide assistance to marshals wishing to attend meetings anywhere across the country:
- www.marshals.org.uk (independent website with calendar guide of events and entry forms)
- MSVR (MotorSport Vision Racing, generally Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Snetterton, Cadwell Park)
- BARC (British Automobile Racing Club, all BTCC rounds plus much more at full range of circuits)
- 750MC (busy meetings at range of circuits)
- BRSCC (British Racing and Sports Car Club, all F3/GT rounds plus more at full range of circuits)
- DDMC (Darlington & District Motor Club, generally club meetings at Croft)
- BMMC (British Motorsport Marshals Club, useful marshalling info plus availability forms)
- BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club, generally at Silverstone)
- Marshals Post
- 10-Tenths Marshals' Forum
- Google Map of UK Circuits
Marshals should note that the British Grand Prix operates a different system to other race events in the UK - marshals are offered the chance to apply by their local club in the year preceding the event. There are requirements as to the minimum number of race meetings attended in the previous year, and no trainees are allowed. Further details can be obtained from Lynn Perkins or on the 10-Tenths marshals' forum.
It is also possible for MSA registered marshals to attend meetings across the world. Marshals should note that the usual MSA insurance will not cover them in other countries. In order to marshal abroad, it is necessary to obtain permission from the MSA. The application can be filled in online using the link below:
Once permission has been obtained from the MSA, the marshal should contact the organising club for the event they are interested in attending.
Marshalling Other Disciplines
Whilst the SMRC organise most of the track racing in Scotland, marshals wanting to get involved in other disciplines may find the SMMC website useful. The Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club provides the rescue units for most SMRC events and is also involved in the rallying and hillclimb scene
Volunteers In Motorsport
Volunteers In Motorsport (ViM) is a national scheme to attract marshals and other volunteers into motorsport. More information about the scheme and how to get involved is available on the ViM website: www.volunteersinmotorsport.co.uk
